Welcome to my website.
I have been drawing and painting since about 4 years of age; it is something I have always gone back to during my life. I have been devoting more time to art since retiring from my profession as a psychotherapist several years ago. I have painted many landscapes in watercolour and more recently have been creating portraits of animals and people, mainly in acrylics.
My acrylic portrait technique involves putting many thin layers of paint in succession; this is similar to that used by the old masters. By the way - the photograph of 'The Milkmaid' in the gallery is a photo of my own painting, a detail of the Vermeer masterpiece, which I found helpful to create for my own learning.
My watercolour landscapes have been mainly influenced by F J Widgery (19th Century) and James Fletcher-Watson (20th Century). I have learned in person from Devon-based tutors Roger Dennis and David Webb, and from award-winning watercolourist Grahame Booth both in person and from his on-line courses. I have also learned from the on-line tutorials given by Andrew Pitt and Tim Wilmot, both very generous teachers. And in particular I am especially indebted to friend and professional artist Sally Gaywood for her in-depth critiques of my work. Her insights have truly taught me to 'see' as an artist.
If you click on one of the images in the album or watercolour landscape section, it will be presented in a larger format.
My work has been selected for exhibition in Torquay, and with the Dartmoor artists (Devon, UK). I was a winner in the National Competition organised by 'The Artist' and 'Leisure Painter' magazines in 2020 with the portrait of the Rhodesian Ridgeback's head. I have also won awards with local art societies.
I live in South Devon, England. For anyone within reasonable distance I am happy to come to sketch portrait subjects and take photos. For those less accessible I am happy to work from quality photographs. Please see the 'Content' page for fees and terms etc. If you are interested in my watercolour tuition at MIC, Buckfastleigh, please click on 'Features' to the right of the heading of the home page. I hope you enjoy the website.
