Commissions taken for portraits

Welcome to my website.

I have been drawing and painting since about 4 years of age; it is something I have always gone back to during my  life.  I have been devoting more time to art since retiring from my profession as a psychotherapist several years ago.   I have painted many landscapes in watercolour and more recently have been creating portraits of animals and people, mainly in acrylics.

My acrylic portrait technique involves putting many thin layers of paint in succession; this is similar to that used by the old masters.   By the way - the photograph of 'The Milkmaid' in the gallery is a photo of my own painting, a detail of the Vermeer masterpiece, which I found helpful to create for my own learning.

If you click on one of the images in the gallery, it will be presented in a larger format.

My work has been selected for exhibition in Torquay,  and with the Dartmoor artists (De
von, UK).  I was a winner in the National Competition organised by 'The Artist' and 'Leisure Painter' magazines in 2020 with the portrait of the Rhodesian Ridgeback's head.  I have also won awards with a local art society.

I live in South Devon, England.    For anyone within reasonable distance I am happy to come to sketch portrait subjects and take photos.   For those less accessible I am happy to work from quality photographs.     Please see the 'Content' page for fees and terms etc.

I hope you enjoy the website.

FEES, CANVASES ETC.

I paint portraits of animals and people on canvases of various sizes.   You can choose a canvas of a narrow depth (2 cm) or a deeper depth (3.5 cm).   The narrow depth is a more traditional choice and most people like to have these framed in a wooden frame (called 'moulding') of their choice.  The deeper frame has a more modern look and it does not require framing around it.   The cost of the canvas (either type) is included in the portrait fee.

The prices for commissions include the price of the canvas but not the price of framing.   The painted canvas only will be sent to you (safely packaged, tracked, and insured).  The price of packaging and shipping is extra to the fee for the portrait.   Then if you want to have it framed you can take it to a framer and choose a frame which suits your decor and taste.

The portraits are done from photographs; it is necessary to have photographs of a sufficiently good quality in order to produce my quality portraits.  I can work from photographs provided by the commissioner and am more than happy to offer advice on how to take photographs which will work for portrait work.  If the commissioner is local to me I am happy to come and take photos (and maybe do some sketches in situ).    The fee for my travelling and taking photos will be extra to the portrait fee and will depend upon distance travelled.   I live in South Devon, England, UK.

Once I have good enough photos I will produce sketches of my proposed portrait and send them to the commissioner for approval before starting the painting.   The cost of the sketches is included in the portrait fee.

Here are my fees, current at October 2022:

10" x 12"  (25.5 cm x 30.5 cm)        £180

12" x 12"   (30.5 cm x 30.5 cm)       £240
